SHAKING MACHINE, TESTING SIEVE, LABORATORY, PORTABLE, HAND-OPERATED, CAPACITY 6 FULL-HEIGHT OR
13 HALF-HEIGHT, 8-INCH STANDARD SIEVES
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description
(CID) for all federal agencies. The original issue of this CID replaced MIL-S-11568.
1. SCOPE.
1.1 Abstract. This CID covers a hand-operated, portable shaking machine intended for use in determining grain-size distribution of soil.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
2.1 Description. The shaking machine shall consist of a sieve carriage and support (without sieves), oscillating mechanism, and a base.
2.2 Materials. The shaking machine shall be fabricated from compatible materials, inherently corrosion resistant, or treated to provide protection against corrosion and deterioration to which the shaking machine may be exposed.
2.2.1 Treatment and painting. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), the shaking machine shall be treated and painted in accordance with the manufacturer's normal method for retail distribution.
2.3 Physical characteristics.
2.3.1 Sieve carriage and support. The sieve carriage and support shall be removable for disassembly, cleaning, and maintenance. The carriage shall hold one through six (minimum) full-height, or from one through 13 (minimum) half-height, 8-inch sieves conforming to ASTM E 11.
